So I've been really busy lately, but in a good way. My latest journey took me to LA for week to meet up with the rest of Tempest and work on performance for Dancing with the Stars. The request for a 30-second segment paired with a few bboys. It ended up being 1:10 with pauses and all (which were needed cuz we were bookin it!). Basically, they set up some scaffolding for us to climb, flip, hang and jump off of. It was a ton of fun... hard, but a ton of fun!

The performance was for the results show, which will be on Tuesday (10/21) night at 8pm on ABC. They pulled in some REALLY talented dancers and choreographed four different segments for four different eras... 1930s, '60s, '80s, and future. We did the '80s with the two bboys. It turned out really well cuz we'd pause periodically and watch the breakers. Everyone was way on point and punched out some seriously big moves! I love adoration, but Caine definitely took the cake with his massive 16-foot front tuck off the upper balcony! It was hard for me to really see what the audience saw since I was concentrating on my own line, but everyone who was there said it was unreal... and who am I to dispute that  I absolutely can't wait to see how it all looks on TV!

Freerunners involved were (from left to right): Gabe "Jaywalker" Nunez, David Elson, Paul "Diddy" Darnell, Luci "Steel" Romberg, NoSole (me), and Caine Sinclair. We picked our lines and tricks, but Victor "Showtime" Lopez got us on track and made it pop!

Big thanks to my homies on Tempest and all the other people/performers there. This was fun as shit, and I can't wait to do it again!

the robot dancers were pretty cool actually. well everything was.

great job brian. i was afraid that they would cover the b boys too much because they are pretty stationary and thats how it ended up. never enough coverage. sick full off of the block tho bro. keep it up man. your definitely a big inspiration for all of us.

yo brian awsome job! those jerks at DWTS really shitted it up tho, with you guys in the background and at the last couple minutes. it shoulda been front and center and also at the beginning lol. damn me and my friend sat through 2 hours of really awkward dances to get to it!

The camera operators are male genitals.... they mostly showed the b-boys...

BENNY
10-22-2008, 02:06 AM
man after watching that again on youtube i feel a little bit pissed off! :squint:

i feel like DWTS ripped us viewers off.

the show didnt emphasize parkour or freerunning AT ALL! they put the tempest guys in this background where the cameras were hardly able to film the tricks, and freerunning was made to be the background act for breakdancing? pk/fr deserves more spotlight than that!
plus they gave our free-runner reps those red costumes so they are even harder to see when that red light comes on!

that show was horribly lame and the one thing they had that was original was the pk/freerun and they didnt capitalize on it! unbelievable!:nono:

hillexallen
10-22-2008, 07:06 AM
Yeah, they should have showed more pk/fr, but come on, it's a dancing show, not a pk show, so you can't really blame them.

BENNY

I like how the last act got no cheering at all. Complete fail. Tempest and the b-boys stole the show.

thats cuz there were no robots in the audience. all the robots watching at home were cheering.

NoSole

would love to hear a bit on how the prep was. did you plan it all out beforehand? how much did you practice on set? did they have to show you how to do the b-boy poses? did you all have to freeze at certain times?

BENNY
10-22-2008, 08:09 PM
yeah were you nervous at all? if it was me i would be so scared of messing up on stage lol

NoSole
10-22-2008, 09:12 PM
Wow! OK, a lot of questions to answer. Ascent, you got it homeboy, we'll train soon for sure. Haku, anytime (sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your PM. My bad :happysad: ) Corn, yeah, I know. I would love to see that with just a single wide angle on the action... they caught most of the big things, but missed how well we all meshed together. Oh well.

There was a ton of prep than went into the show. The dancers rehearsed for at least a day or two before even getting to the studio. We couldn't, obviously, because we needed to have the scaffolding to practice on. All I can say is that it took a lot of work to get it where it was. It changed several times to get it just right. All in all, we put in 20 hours of practice.

The first day, we checked out the stage and just kinda monkeyed around for about half the day til we picked lines that we were all comfortable with, and that wouldn't interfere with anyone else's. Then we practiced getting it to fill the 30 second requirement.

Halfway through the second day we found out that the bboys would be dancing with us, so we had to add the pauses in, which consumed a lot of time getting them right. That screwed up a bunch too because people had to be sure they were at a place in their run so a pause would look natural. Eventually, we got it worked out and used the third rehearsal day to work out the kinks.

The third day was pretty rough because we had to wake up at 5am to do a piece for KTLA (which I find a link for, and post up here). So when we finally got to the studio two hours early for rehearsal, we all passed the fuck out! Some seriously needed sleep. We didn't actually do any full run-throughs til Friday (meaning all flips and tricks) because the strain on our bodies to do that many takes was pretty brutal. By the end of Friday, we had it down pretty good.

Eventually we got it down to where all of six of us were hustling full speed to our locations and timing was so precise that if we waited a beat or two longer in any one place it definitely woulda caused some serious injuries. But big props to Tempest for being so professional! Everyone was really on point so when final shoot came, it was all business and not a single person missed a beat or stumbled in the slightest! We went through 6 full run-throughs on the day of the show so the guys could get the 12 cameras synced up to our runs... that sucked a lot of energy out of me for sure!

Once it came to show time, we got a lil nervous, but like I said, everyone was all business. I was nursing several injuries, but once we were in the thick of it, the adrenaline took over and everything but the tricks faded into the background. The segment they aired, was the last of three takes we shot in full costume with lights and everything. It was awesome to be in a room with so much energy. Having the pressure for perfection was good too. Def made us hit all our cues right on point. At the end of each run each one of us was pumped because we all knew that we did it exactly like we were supposed to. The 45-50 runs we practiced the days prior made the end product a snap.

My favorite part... never once did ANYONE say "Don't do that" for any reason whatsoever! It was liberating to be in a professional environment where people expect you to do "crazy" things they've never seen before. I only say "crazy" with quotes cuz to us, it's normal

If I can get photoshop reinstalled on my comp, I'll try to trace the paths that each person took so you can get an idea of how complicated it was.

wow. :eek3: its cool to hear the behind-the-scenes, obviously theres a LOT of work and training and conditioning and practicing to get there! not quite as easy as people may think :kekekegay:

NoSole

Alright, so unfortunately the way KTLA's site is set up I can't link directly to the videos of our news segment, but I can tell you how to get there:

1.) Go to http://www.ktla.com/pages/alliemackay
2.) In the media player scroll through the other vids on the side bar til you find Allie tries Free Running?!? and What is Free Running? Those were two of the three segments they posted from that morning.

I thought they were pretty funny and a lil lame, but I guess it's still press! Haha.
