Hi Nate.

The best way to learn is to find a session that's going on near you and see it in person. There's a lot more to parkour than can easily be described in words, or even in the videos (which I assume you've seen). But the site has a lot of resources for you if you'd like to get started. Just take a look around the forum or the front page, there'll be links to videos, tutorials, articles, and help. If there's something you can't find, just post a reply or a thread and someone will help you out. We're all very friendly and inclusive here, beginners are always welcome, so don't hesitate to ask.

Yeah I hadn't really heard of it before today, I was hanging with my friends and there were a couple of guys doing it and they showed us some stuff. He recommended this site, his name was victor I think

Victor Lo Forte? If you're in the Sacramento area, I assume that's who it was. Check out the thread for the Sacramento training sessions.

If you're just looking for an idea of what parkour is in general, the wikipedia article is pretty good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkour Also take a look at some of the videos; there's a thread called "Random parkour/youtube videos" that has links to a lot of good stuff.

Yeah I'm in the Sacramento area. I read the wikipedia article and I've seen some vids but I really can't imagine doing half of that stuff

Heh, you're not alone - we all start out that way. What you don't see in most of the videos is the time they put into practicing, training, conditioning to get to being able to do what they do. But if you want to try to learn, it's not out of your reach. One of the most important things parkour can teach you - at least, it's the most important to me - is mental strength. Confidence built through actually using your body and finding out what it can do, then targeting those boundaries and pushing them through training. It's really exhilarating when gaining those milestones, though, and that's why I train.

Yeah it looks like a lot of fun, I might go to a jam tommorrow and see what I can learn from everyone there.

Yeah more than likely, Brent will probably be there and maybe Jake, the other two dudes you met. If I'm gonna get into this I'm gonna try and pull all my friends in too

Nate527

so what exactly does a jam consist of

Bagheera
03-01-2009, 11:12 AM
A warm up, maybe some stretching, then moving from spot to spot jumping around, maybe some strength training. We prolly wont be out for a long time today because of the rain, but we'll be out there for awhile.

Cool, I'm definitely going to be there, should I wear skating shoes or running shoes, because I think my skating shoes have more grip

Bagheera

I tend to like running shoes more, but whatever feels comfy to you, wear what lets you move around better. And try to wear synthetic stuff instead of cotton, wet cotton sucks lol

Wear what's more comfortable to run in. Don't worry about grip, that's not important.

Another good workout is to fox walk, but stay as low as you can like you're sneaking under something, killer leg workout.

Bagheera
03-01-2009, 09:49 PM
heheheh

Theres one called the ghost walk. When you're wearing shoes, it can sometimes be difficult and loud to fox walk, so instead, when u r sneaking, you make contact with the outside of your heel, and roll in.

Welcome Nate! You're in good hands with Victor. As you probably found out today, there's lots of really cool small stuff that you can do that will keep you plenty busy and having fun while you work up to what you see in videos.

Nate527
