What would you say if someone said that parkour was stupid and tell you that it would only kill you and raise the price on your health insurance?

Grown ups don't usually say stuff like that to each other. My response would probably be laughter.

Check out the "Mocking/Being laughed at" thread on APK - http://www.americanparkour.com/smf/index.php?topic=16524.0

My response - I practice parkour for myself, and not for anyone else!

I ignore them or give them an endless lecture on parkour, it's origins and philosophy, and its history until they get bored and go away.

I'd just say "then don't do it" and leave it at that.

Punch them in the eye.

Or just ask them why they feel it's their business. Or ask tell them you didn't ask for their opinion on your lifestyle choices.

Or laugh at them.

i havnt told my parents yet. lol, i plan to if i get serious. currently i'm just learning the basic movements, but if i actually going around traversing the urban environment then i think i might have to admit it then lol. i would have told my parents, but they dont like me doing things alone or with people SHE doesnt know. which sucks cuz the best way to learn parkour is to meet up with someone (and im still working on that bit)

i told my parents when I first found parkour, I was like hey, I'd like to try this, there's this guy named victor who runs practices at bella vista, can i go?

you might want to consider telling them whether or not you'll be traversing the urban environment, parents like it when you're honest with them.

and for being mocked, it's really sad that some people still do that past grade school. Just ignore them. Don't try to hit them, or show off, or taunt them. I do like the suggestion of talking to them about the history of parkour and whatnot until they leave.

i get really self conscious when people watch me. i'm standing there in the school, trying to get the balls to try something new, and some old asian lady is standing there with her children watching me...:wtf: then she started saying somthing i couldnt understand... it's a lot easier when my friend is with me, because he doesnt care. (he has no idea what he is doing, and he tries speed vaulting over a upper chest couch in the middle of a mall):owneddance:

and with my parents, its jsut a matter finding someone to do it with. like she barely let me bike to a park taht was like 1 1/2 miles away so i could hang out with my friends (with a little PK practice thrown in:kekekegay:)

I get laughed at all the time (until I do something awesome, but that's not the point.) Walking away, shrugging it off, and continuing with your training is by far the best way to deal with it if the hecklers are unopen to giving it a try themselves. Otherwise, bring them to our side, let our people grow :)
